Fringed by tall coconut groves and bordered by the Arabian Sea, this idyllic coastal town in Kerala welcomes you for a delightful vacation by the sea. A quick drive from the capital Trivandrum, Kovalam is one of the best beach destinations in India. Unlike its party cousin Goa, Kovalam is more about quiet beaches, a sprinkling of Yoga & Ayurveda, and riding the splendid surf. This hippie retreat of the 1970s, now developed as a sought-after beach resort town, beckons you for some fun in the sun, sand, and sea.
Named after its tall candy-striped lighthouse, this gorgeous beach is a beach bum’s delight. Golden sands, pristine waters, and marvelous surf call you for some fun at Lighthouse Beach. Climb up the lighthouse for faraway views, ride the waves, or try your hand at parasailing- the fun never ends here! A sprinkling of shacks at the beach offers delicious fare for hungry tummies.
A quiet stretch of sand, Hawa beach is best for an idyllic day by the sea. Spread your towel on the sands, lie down in the sun, and read a book as you sip a cold beer, or go for a romantic stroll here and watch the stunning sunset at Hawa.
A little isolated, craggy, and much quiet, Samudra Beach is separated from the northerner side by a large rocky outcrop. Head out to the beach in the mornings and evenings to watch shoreline fishing as the village fishermen get into action.
A short drive from Kovalam takes you to this gorgeous freshwater lake spread over an area of 7.5 acres. Surrounded by lush coconut groves & backwaters, and its surface crisscrossed with purple water lilies, the lake is a heavenly picture. Linked with many local legends & folklore, Vellayani Kayal overflows with energy & festive spirit during Onam when huge snake-boats race across its waters.
Kovalam is as much about adventure as it is about quiet beach bumming & sunning by the sea. Go swimming in its natural bays, try snorkeling in the deep, or go kayaking in the waters here. Parasailing and windsurfing are also open for adventure seekers. However, nothing beats surfing as Kovalam offers some great breakpoints and high waves for you to ride the board.
The beach is sprinkled with Ayurveda resorts & spas that promise you a range of Ayurveda therapies, aromatic massages, and some quiet meditation by the sea. Just check into a boutique spa in Kovalam to revitalize your body & soul.
Kerala Village Fair- A recreation of nostalgic & rustic charms of Kerala. Held for 10 days annually in January.
The Elephant Festival, Kovalam- Held annually in January
Fandango Festival- A three day food festival, organized every year in January.
Kovalam’s beaches are dotted with quirky stalls selling a whole lot of souvenirs from teak & rosewood figurines & boxes to seashell jewelry, rich spices, and pretty trinkets.
Kovalam serves you delicious Kerala cuisine with a smattering of hoppers & stews, the regular beef & chicken fry, and the famous idly-dosa, but nothing beats its fresh seafood cooked with coconut milk and aromatic spices. A lot of beachside shacks display fresh catch on ice. Pick your fish, and they cook it right before you for a super seafood experience!
The best time to visit this beach resort town would be in winter from October to February.
