A charming jumble of modern-traditional set amid eternal greenery, Trivandrum is the gorgeous capital of Kerala. Officially the city has reverted to its older name Thiruvananthapuram, but its colonial-era name, Trivandrum, has just stuck! Rolling hills, forest reserves, age-old temples, and beaches & backwaters- Trivandrum holds the essence of Kerala in its folds.
This ancient temple has not only religious but also historical ties to Trivandrum because the Travancore royalty ruled the region as Padmanabha Dasas, translating to the servants of Lord Padmanabhaswamy. Built-in a distinctive blend of Tamil-Kerala architecture, its sky-high Gopuram, gold mandapam, aesthetic murals, and musical pillars create a picture of spiritual elegance.
Often called the horse museum on account of 122 smiling horses carved into its wooden brackets, this Travancore palace showcases priceless artifacts of the Travancore royalty. Its astonishing collection of Belgian crystal chandeliers, Italian mirrors, Greek statues, and various relics of the Travancore dynasty.
Walk into this fascinating museum for a peek into the rich history, art, and culture of the Travancore dynasty. The museum is not only known for its stunning collection of artifacts but also its heritage building adorned with hand painted frescos, pretty stained glass windows, and natural air conditioning effect.
Admire a rare set of paintings by acclaimed painters like Ravi Raja Varma, Nicholas Roerich, and a smattering of art in the form of bejeweled Tanjore paintings, Rajasthani miniature paintings, and some artistic canvases from the Far East.
Just outside the city limits, this beautiful beach is a slice of untainted joy. Golden sands, pristine waters, and a massive mermaid statue make it a great place for some beach fun.
Trivandrum has its sprinkling of emerald backwaters dotting the region. The gorgeous Veli lagoon, the serene Akkulam Lake, and spectacular Poovar Island make quiet backwaters destinations away from the touristic clamor of Alleppey & Kumarakom. Stay in a houseboat and sail through the picturesque backwaters.
Kovalam- (16kms) – Unlimited beach and Ayurveda fun
Varkala (33kms) – A spectacular beach resort town known for its dramatic cliffs & gorgeous sunsets.
Onam- Homecoming of King Mahabali, Snake Boat Race, held in August/September

Trivandrum is a great place to shop for the classic white & gold Kerala saris, miniature snake boat, coconut shell & coir décor stuff, carved wooden boxes, Kathakali masks, and aromatic Kerala spices.
Trivandrum brings you the taste of Kerala in the form of delicious Puttu & Kadala curry, Appam & stew, Idiappams, beef fry, prawns curry, and layered Malabar parottas.
The best time to visit Trivandrum would be in winter from October to February.
