Discover the bewitching beauty of historic archeological site lying in the ‘City of Moon’ – Khajuraho. The city is famous for ancient Hindus and Jain temples reflecting classic Nagar style architecture. Delve in the exemplary structures embodied with rich art, which depict spirituality, royalty and sensual sculptures.
Chand dynasty built this group of 85 temples during 950 - 1050 AD. Unfortunately only 20 remain today and are declared UNESCO World Heritage sites. The works are invariably imbued with a sense of calm and serenity making your visit a memorable one.
Start with the Eastern group that is best known for Parsvanath Temple, Ghantai Temple and Adinath Temple. These are Jain temples dedicated to Tirthankaras; Parsvanath is the largest of this type. Admire the intricate motifs and immaculate sculptures that depict the scenes from the daily life of Chandela rulers.
The Western group is considered to be the main highlight of the temple complex. It gives you an overview of the Indo-Aryan architecture. Make your way to its most visited temples: Kendriya Mahadeva, Devi Jagdamba Temple and Chaunsat Yogini Temple. It is a phenomenal example of elaborately decorated temples. The walls adorned with fine carvings, erotic sculptures, animals and human figures takes art to a whole new level.
The Southern group of temples in Khajuraho lies at a comparatively distant location from the other groups. It consists of Duladeo temple, Chaturbhuj temple and Beejamandal temple. The most popular among tourists is Duladeo temple in the southern group. Chaturbhuj temple is the only temple in Khajuraho that distinctively does not contain any sensual sculpture.
Listen to the melody of nature in this spellbinding natural waterfall located on Ken River. It is located nearly 20 km away from Khajuraho. The sight of water falling from a towering height of 30 m represents the phenomenal creativity of nature. Apart from gushing water, another striking feature is the queer shape of rocks resembling crystal top formations.
Another wonder of nature that you will find in Khajuraho is Pandav Falls. Located 35 km away from the main city, it can be found on the tributary of Ken River. The name is derived from the legendary Pandava brothers mention in the Sanskrit epic of ancient India, Mahabharata. Lose yourself in its freshness and clean water that is also known to carry medicinal properties.
The ideal weather to visit this beautiful heart of India is during winters from October to March.
By Air- Khajuraho Civil Aerodrome serves the city with flights to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Varanasi and Indore. It is located about 2 km from the town centre.
