Allahabad, officially known as Payagraj, is one of the sought after cities in Uttar Pradesh. It is located at the confluence of three rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
The merger of three sacred rivers makes the city utterly religiously significant. Its sacred status is boosted by it being one of the four holy sites of grand and famous Kumbha Mela. In addition to it, you will also be amazed by the gorgeous historical gems like fort, museum and colonial-era monuments.
Established in the 17th century, the bagh is a beautiful garden located at Lukarganj. It is famous for boasting the richly decorated tombs of the family members of Mughal Emperor, Jahangir. Hence, the name comes from the tomb of Prince Khusro or Khusro Mirza, the eldest son of Jahangir. Other tombs present here are of Shah Begum (Khusro's mother), Nesa Begum (Khusro's Sister) and Tamerlan's (remains unidentified).
Triveni Sangam meaning 'Confluence of three rivers' is the iconic landmark of Allahabad. As the name suggests, it is the meeting point of three sacred rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. You can see the converging point by hiring a boat from the Qila Ghat. Sangams have always been of religious significance. Join the devotees and take a holy dip which is believed to achieve moksha (salvation). Then walk to nearby Saraswati and Nehru Ghats to see the famous spiritual event, evening aarti.
When in Allahabad, this rustic yet fascinating fort is the first thing you should see. It was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583 on the serene bank of Yamuna River. The interesting thing about its location is that iconic Triveni Sangam lies close it. Take a tour and unravel beautiful features of the fort like watchtowers, Zenana Palace, Saraswati Koop and 3rd-century BC Ashoka Pillar.
Also referred to as ‘Patthar Girja’ (Stone Church), it is one of the few colonial structures in Allahabad. It was constructed in the 19th century embodying the Gothic style of architecture. If you have an eye for art, be prepared to get awestruck by the aesthetic designs on the marble altars, stained glass panels with the massive pulpit and more. You can find it at the Sarojini Naidu Marg, Civil Lines in Allahbad.
It is a two-story building which used to be the ancestral home of Jawahar Lal Nehru. Today, it is of high national importance featuring a thematic museum inside which will show you relics of Nehru. These include his well-preserved books, personal items and photos. It also has the Jawahar Planetarium which hosts educational shows every hour.
Allahaba is best visited in the winter months from October to March.
